JAILED: the far-right racist who called for the burning of mosques on Facebook

A 51-year-old racist received a 10-month prison sentence last month after calling for the burning of mosques, outlawing Islam, and labelling Muslims as “dirty, twisted s***-stinking paedos” on Facebook.

Paul Shelton posted under the pseudonym “Pedro Smokey” and used the public group The Realist People Movement to post his violent, racist speech in October 2018.

Members of the public who took screenshots of the comments forwarded them on to the police, who located Shelton at their home address in Buxton Road, Furness Vale.

Shelton also used the racist epithet the P-word, according to DerbyshireLive.

The prosecution outlined how Mr Shelton proved uncooperative with police – examples presented included that when asked if he was behind the account, Shelton replied, “I can’t answer that question.”

Following two charges of publishing threatening written material intending to stir up religious hatred with a trial date at Derbyshire Crown Court for January 2020 – but delays shifted the trial date to January 18, 2022, where Shelton changed course and entered a guilty plea.

Judge Shaun Smith handed Shelton a 10-month custodial sentence – imposing a further ten months on licence.

Judge Smith said of Shelton: “What you posted was utterly vile, grossly offensive and appalling.

“No right-thinking person would think this is anything other than abhorrent.”

On Facebook, Shelton also promoted a far-right EDL protest outside of the so-called “Didsbury paedo cult hall,” and he called on others to burn it down and “cook our bacon on its ashes.”

In mitigation, the defence unsuccessfully argued that Shelton had “disavowed” his views and re-connected with his daughter and their Iraqi partner, along with a grandchild he “spoils”.

Detective Inspector Graham Prince, who leads the Derbyshire team at Counter-Terrorism Policing East Midlands that dealt with the case, said: “The language used by Paul Shelton in his posts were nothing short of horrifying.

“We have seen on an all too frequent basis the way in which online postings such as this can be taken into the physical world with absolutely devastating consequences – and it is clear from the sentence imposed that the courts have taken this matter very seriously.

“This is not a victimless crime or one that is any less serious simply because it was posted on Facebook. There should be no place for this type of hate speech and as a force, and region, we will do all we can to ensure that where people cross the line from debate into hate then they are rightly brought to justice.”

Shelton also received a five-year criminal behavioural order – meaning he must provide the police with details of any electronic devices he possesses – and provide passwords. If Shelton intends to use social media again, he must also do so with his real name.

Muslim woman assaulted, hijab pulled, bag torn on DLR train

The British Transport Police (BTP) have issued a CCTV appeal for information following a racist assault on a Muslim woman on a DLR train as it approached Poplar station in east London.

The anti-Muslim and Islamophobic assault occurred on the evening of January 20, as the perpetrator targeted the woman, who wears the hijab, with racist abuse as she stood by the train doors.

According to the BTP, the racist then assaulted the woman by attempting to tear off her hijab before grabbing the woman’s rucksack with such force it caused a strap to tear.

The CCTV images released of a white male wearing a brightly coloured jacket with their blue hood up may help the BTP an individual who may assist with their investigation, the press release adds.

Racist man punched Muslim teen in hijab in her nose in Swiss Cottage

The Metropolitan Police are investigating a shockingly violent racist attack on a Black Somali Muslim teen in Swiss Cottage, in the London borough of Camden.

18-year-old Ayan Mohamoud reached out to Tell MAMA on social media and consented for us to tell her story.

Ayan described how the assault occurred by the fountain located with the Swiss Cottage open space. Ayan had arrived there at around 7:30 pm on February 13, having finished work thirty minutes earlier.

During her walk, she noticed a single male walking in the opposite direction, and thinking nothing of it, paid no attention to him or made eye contact. The man, however, hesitated in his step as he approached before punching her in the nose. He said nothing and soon walked away.

The shock of the assault left her frozen, and with her nose bleeding profusely, she screamed and sought help from members of the public.

Sadly, one member of the public ignored her pleas.

Ayan soon called her mother in tears, and once safely home, called the police.

Officers attended the address that evening.

She also attended the hospital to have her injuries assessed.

The injuries and pains included issues with her eyes, which she remedied with eye drops, whilst the initial swelling on her nose has decreased – but described to our Casework Team that she is now suffering from severe headaches, neck aches, eye and nose pains. She disclosed photos of her injuries which appear below.

Ayan believes the assault may have been Islamophobic in nature, given that she was wearing a hijab and abaya when the assault occurred.

Posting her experiences of the assault on TikTok is another way she hopes will raise awareness and help police catch those responsible.

She thanked Tell MAMA for their support, stating, “Thank you so much for the support. I really appreciate it.”

Locals remove sticker of far-right Polish clothing brand in Walthamstow

A sticker promoting a far-right website in Poland found on a bus stop in Walthamstow has since been removed.

A resident waiting for a bus on the evening of January 19 on Hoe Street saw the sticker, which read “F*** the system,” but did not learn of its violent, hateful nature until they researched it further on their route home.

A local resident documented the sticker without knowing its origins. The subsequent removal occurred on Jan 31 (or sometime earlier).

To understand more about the website, Tell MAMA spoke with Never Again – one of Poland’s most prominent anti-racism organisations.

A spokesperson confirmed its links to the violent football hooligan scene with strong far-right links, with an assortment of its “products” offering violent messages (including violent death threats against police and alleged informers).

Never Again mentioned how the far-right political actor and agitator Marian Kowalski had promoted their materials on social media. The t-shirt Kowalski promoted in 2017 pushed a racialised, harmful, anti-Muslim and Islamophobic trope of so-called “Islamisation” – and remains available to purchase in 2022. The backprint of the product depicts a burning mosque with blood splatter in the background. As late as 2017, the company also sold a t-shirt variant of this violently anti-Muslim and Islamophobic product – archives confirm.

Poland is 99.9 per cent Christian, according to the 2011 census. European Union data shows that whilst Poland has no official religion, an overwhelming majority (around 87 per cent) of the population are Roman-Catholic. A wealth of academic research, including on “Islamophobia without Muslims” and how such narratives (in politics and sections of the press) stigmatised and targeted refugees.

A further item for sale included a dog tag that promotes the conspiracy, linking Muslims to ISIS.

Our investigation revealed how the Facebook profile of the clothing brand shared an Islamophobic conspiracy video from 2013 about demographics in a video titled “Who can stop Islam?”.

A year earlier, the Facebook page shared a racist and homophobic meme about throwing such minoritised groups off a plane in alphabetical order to prevent a fictitious plane from crashing.

That same year, the company promoted the white supremacist slogan “anti-Antifa” as a marketing tool on Facebook on multiple occasions.

During our investigation, the local resident who contacted us, to begin with, made further contact. In correspondence with Tell MAMA, they stated that the sticker had its URL link scratched off before someone had removed it, attaching photographic proof dated January 31.

Wanting to remain anonymous, they expressed gratitude at however removed it, adding that, for its multiculturalism, it remained of concern that individuals with racist, far-right agendas felt emboldened to spread hate and propaganda in the area.

Customers stand up for Muslim woman abused in Northampton cafe

A Muslim family enjoying a New Year’s walk faced abuse from a female customer when queuing for hot drinks at a café in Northampton.

Agreeing to have their story told based on anonymity, they described how the length of the queue was awkward for customers and staff, as the mother, who wears the hijab, politely apologised to one member of staff after making way for them to use a door.

Speaking to Tell MAMA, she then described how a middle-aged white woman with red hair crept close to her before whispering in her ear, “That’s what not you’re meant to do.”

Understandably perplexed by their actions, the Muslim woman asked the red-haired woman several times to repeat her statement before she aggressively stated that “it’s called being KIND”.

Being the only ethnic minority in the room, she felt singled out because of her ethnicity and hijab, which she maintains she wears with pride.

The aggression did not go unnoticed by other customers who defended them.

At this moment, she realised a racist motive was at hand when speaking about the support given, noting how a customer behind them challenged the perpetrator and said, “we were just as close to the door; why didn’t you say that to us?” – to which the perpetrator had no reply.

She expressed her immense gratitude for the upstanders who defended her, including those who comforted her as she got teary-eyed, with one fellow customer telling her, “Don’t waste anymore time on her”.

The tears carried over when leaving the café, but she remained resolute in challenging this, and with their informed consent, Tell MAMA will write to the café to raise awareness and protect their identity further, will not disclose its name for now.

There is a vast body of academic research and literature on the harms and impacts of microaggressions. And how they commonly occur: as microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations, which can prove mentally draining, increase stress, and result in poor mental health outcomes. Further studies found how anti-Muslim and Islamophobic microaggressions manifested as harmful stereotypes about terrorism amongst university students in parts of Canada. A different study looked at religiously-motivated microaggressions (where a Muslim student described being othered by a group of Christian students for practising the “wrong religion”). Other studies explored the intersectionality of how microaggressions target Black and South Asian Muslims in particular ways. Equally, some Black Muslims on majority-white campuses struggled to get their peers to acknowledge their ethnic and religious identities.

Far-right terror teen who wanted to attack mosque avoids prison

A far-right terrorist who wanted to indiscriminately murder Muslims at a mosque and kill “10,000 people” avoided a prison sentence, receiving a 24-month youth rehabilitation order instead.

The 17-year-old from Wiltshire, who maintains legal anonymity due to their age, was given the sentence at Southampton Youth Court.

The sentence mirrors that given to a neo-Nazi terrorist, who came to the attention of authorities aged just thirteen before receiving their rehabilitation order in February 2021.

He pleaded guilty to possessing material likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

The investigation began when the public contacted the authorities following a slew of racist comments on online message boards – including a desire to murder Muslims with a gun at a mosque, a chilling reminder of the lingering influence of the white supremacist terrorist who murdered 51 Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand in March 2019.

On June 18, 2021, an arrest resulted in police finding a handwritten note at their home address called “The Big Plan”.

A spokesperson for Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) revealed that in contained information and “details of how to make a bomb,” identifiable locations and individuals they believed to be “aspirational targets” amidst an intention to kill over 10,000 people.

Detective Chief Superintendent Kath Barnes, who leads the CTPSE, thanked those who reported the individual to the anti-terrorism hotline. In a statement, she said: “Having read the vile racist abuse online, they chose to ACT; they contacted the Anti-Terrorism Hotline and shared their concerns with us, and as a result, we were able to intervene before the situation escalated any further.”

CTPSE have also documented “an increase in the proportion of our investigations from the threat from extreme right-wing terrorism.”

Deb Smith, Wiltshire Police’s Assistant Chief Constable, said: “I hope that our communities feel reassured that we acted swiftly, in conjunction with our partners, to ensure that this individual was detained and could no longer pose a risk to the wider public.”

Report highlights racism, discrimination towards Muslim NHS staff

A wide-ranging survey of Muslim healthcare professionals (HCP) in the NHS reveals a startling and deeply worrying level of anti-Muslim abuse, discrimination, and Islamophobia, exacerbated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The report, co-authored by Dr Hina J Shahid, a GP who chairs the Muslim Doctors Association and Hira Ali, who co-founded The Grey Area and currently leads on their Diversity & Inclusion, titled the report, “Excluded on the Frontline: Discrimination, Racism and Islamophobia in the NHS.”

Critical findings reveal that almost nine in 10 Muslim HCPs surveyed did not know of any Muslims in leadership roles, as over two-thirds could not identify relatable and supportive mentors and role models to boost their confidence about career progression.

Almost four in 10 surveyed described facing verbal abuse from colleagues about their Islamic faith – compounding the bias they also face from patients.

Bias, however, the authors noted follows Muslim HCPs from medical school and further into their carers.

A vast majority of Muslim HCPs (eight out of 10) surveyed described a “double jeopardy” around their safety when acts of terrorism make headlines.

Microaggressions in the workplace target specific and multiple aspects of their religious identity, with a majority, also reporting how ‘othering’ and stereotype threat harms their ability to be their true, authentic selves at work.

The consequences for Muslim HCPs weigh heavy on them mentally and physically – manifesting as depression, anxiety, imposter syndrome, low self-esteem, a fear of failure – with almost half of respondents described compromising their religious beliefs (associated with moral injury and distress).

As a consequence of the above, two-thirds do not feel comfortable disclosing workplace problems.

Workplace bias extended to the feeling that one in five missed out on promotion due to their Islamic faith, with more than two in five describing bias in the recruitment process with similar levels reported during medical school, and crucially, over half reported feeling that bias impeded their career progression and daily duties.

Regarding the sources of bias, the authors noted that some polled faced multiple biases – from patients, nurses and other doctors to line managers.

Almost half of Muslim HCPs reported facing verbal abuse, with three in 10 reporting hostility directed towards them because of their faith. Issues arose over fasting during the holy month of Ramadan or taking prayer breaks.

Despite the myriad issues the report exposes, over half (six in 10) reported optimism about their futures.

Those surveyed overwhelmingly favoured a mentorship to help them tackle disadvantage and discrimination. A clear majority (7 out of 10) felt a faith network within the workplace would help as just over half believed that self-empowerment and leadership training programmes would aid them.

The report also presents many pathways forward the “The 4As of active support” – identified as authentic allyship, advocacy, action and accountability.

That twelve-point action plan begins on an individual level (with self-reflection and questioning the assumptions each holds) to meaningful changes in leadership. The authors call for authentic leadership and representation in senior roles born not from tokenism but on the competency, capability, and credibility to meet the role requirements, with the resources and agency to perform their roles effectively, adding that “spotlight events” create platforms for personal narratives of organisational success to foster better inclusion.

Other recommendations include spaces for a constructive, inclusive working environment that incorporates bystander training and unconscious bias training for staff and management.

Celebrating differences, including interfaith events and normalising religious practices, helps reduce stigma and othering, with non-Muslim staff fasting during Ramadan as a positive force for building mutuality and compassion. And this extends to creating interfaith buddy schemes and improved peer support networks.

The report calls for the expansion of faith-specific counselling for Muslim staff, the development of faith-based equality standards and accessible training programmes. An intersectional framework is a crucial way forward in helping NHS trusts and organisations move forward when conducting equalities assessments.

Nor are the issues of structural racism new in the health service.

Warrant issued for elder brother of Manchester Arena bomber to attend inquiry

The elder brother of Salman Abedi will be arrested and brought to the Manchester Arena Inquiry to give evidence if he comes back to the UK, a judge has ruled.

Ismail Abedi, 28, had been ordered to attend the public inquiry into the May 2017 terror attack but boarded a flight to Istanbul from Manchester Airport at the end of August and has not returned.

Bereaved families of the 22 people killed in the explosion labelled him a “coward” for refusing to attend in October and give an account as to how Salman Abedi, 22, had become radicalised.

They said they were “shocked” how he was allowed to leave a day after he missed a flight when he was stopped and questioned by police and told them he was going on a three-week break.

On Friday, Mr Justice Sweeney sitting at Manchester Civil Justice Centre granted an application from inquiry chair Sir John Saunders to issue a bench warrant against Abedi.

Paul Greaney QC, for the applicant, argued Abedi had “important” evidence to give on his younger brother’s path to extremism.

He said the inquiry heard this week that their father, Ramadan Abedi, was associated with the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, a militia that had links with terror organisation al-Qaeda.

Another Abedi brother, Hashem, 24, was jailed for life last year for the 22 murders by assisting the bomb plot.

Mr Greaney said: “The question that the inquiry would like to pose is was Ramadan Abedi a violent Islamist extremist and if so did that rub off on his sons.”

He said the inquiry also wants to know if Salman and Hashem had received military training in Libya after photographs of the pair holding weapons were found on Ismail’s phone.

Another area to probe would be to ask Ismail if it was “just a coincidence” that Salman spent increased time with mutual friend Abdalraouf Abdallah, 28 – later jailed for terrorism offences – in 2015 and 2016 when he was said to have eschewed his previous partying lifestyle and become more religious, said Mr Greaney.

Finally, Abedi has potential relevant evidence to give, said Mr Greaney, on the preparation of the bomb given his DNA was found on a hammer in a car used to store the explosives.

Rebecca Filletti, appearing for Abedi under his new name of Ben Romdhan, said he was held in custody for two weeks after the attack in 2017 and he was detained again in August this year when his phone was examined, with neither investigation resulting in any criminal charges.

She also pointed out her client aired caution over the issue of forensics as the court would be aware DNA is transferable and the hammer was a moveable object.

Last month, lawyers for Abedi issued a statement in which they said he was unwilling to give evidence and the questions asked by the inquiry are “essentially the same as he was asked by the police”.

He added requiring him to attend before the inquiry would place him and his family at risk.

It is understood Abedi’s wife and child flew out separately to join him.

At the time of the bombing, Ramadan Abedi was in his homeland of Libya where he remains and has not co-operated with the inquiry. Police still want to question him as a suspect.

Friday’s hearing was told Ismail Abedi could face criminal prosecution if he does not attend the inquiry before it ends.

Muslim girls assaulted by group of women who tried to yank their hijabs off

South Yorkshire Police are investigating an Islamophobic hate crime in the Attercliffe area of Sheffield following the assaults on two Muslim girls.

A police appeal, published on Friday (November 22), detailed how the two girls, aged 14 and 13, had left the mosque on Staniforth Road when four women of unknown description approached them before assaulting them.

The anti-Muslim assault occurred on October 14 at 19:40 GMT.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the perpetrators had, during the attack, sought to remove their hijabs and other religious clothing, adding that both girls suffered minor injuries.

As protocol, we urge Muslim communities to keep our safety tips in mind, more so when attending and leaving mosques or other Islamic institutions. In addition, our Resources section contain safety advice tailored for children and young people.

The assault made headlines in various newspapers – though it remains somewhat surprising that the BBC coverage excluded the crime reference number, which appears in the police appeal, we hope this is corrected, in line with other news coverage.

Tell MAMA is liaising with the police on this matter further, as we endeavour to provide updates where possible.

Woman called a “Muslim b****” and told she had “dirty hair” on London bus

A Muslim woman travelling on an evening bus towards Clapham described being called a “Muslim b****” by a female passenger who continued to abuse and swear at her throughout their journey.

The perpetrator also told her: “look at you with your dirty hair, you sl*g, you sl*t.”

A Spanish man, disturbed by the ongoing abuse, approached the driver to intervene, who, according to the Muslim woman, dismissively declined to intervene, claiming that the perpetrator had ‘mental health issues’.

The man then approached the Muslim woman to check on her, asking how she was doing, but she did not want to reveal how upset the abuse made her.

The Metropolitan Police continues to investigate the anti-Muslim and Islamophobic incident, which occurred on the evening of October 12.

Transport for London (TfL) provides forms to complain about buses and their bus staff on its website, with TfL aiming to reply within ten days. London Travelwatch is the official watchdog for transport users across London for those seeking to escalate complaints further. If individuals remain unhappy about how the above handled their complaint, they may consider raising a complaint with the Ombudsman.

She described the perpetrator as a Black woman in their mid-to-late fifties.

The growing problem of hate crime on London buses made headlines earlier this year, showcasing that recorded hate crime on London buses during the first Covid-19 lockdown jumped from 43 in May to 115 in June – a startling rise of 167.44 per cent. A spokesperson for Tell MAMA told the press at the time: “These figures are concerning since they show that prejudice against people of colour and of perceived different faiths rose.
