515 anti-Muslim cases reported to Tell MAMA between Oct 7-29

Tell MAMA logged 515 anti-Muslim cases between October 7 and October 29 – a seven-fold increase over the same period last year (where we received 73 cases).

Of the 515 cases, 247 cases happened offline – with 177 cases of abusive behaviour, 25 threats, 24 assaults, 13 cases of vandalism, 11 acts of discrimination, 12 cases of hate speech and 5 examples of anti-Muslim literature.

Cases occurred in areas like London (155), North West (26), Lancashire (6), South Yorkshire (7), West Yorkshire (12), East Midlands (9) and West Midlands (13), South East (4), South West (5), North East (6), Wales (2), Scotland (2).

In the online world, Tell MAMA received 268 cases.

Like all Tell MAMA cases, the figures are subject to further revision and analysis.

LinkedIn removed a dehumanising, anti-Muslim post that called Muslims an ‘infestation’ in a rant that also contained white supremacist language after Tell MAMA flagged it. We also filed a report with the Metropolitan Police to investigate further.

Broader anti-Muslim narratives on social media platforms like Twitter/X link Muslims to terrorism as far-right accounts push securitisation narratives about Muslim women in calls to ban articles of religious clothing.

We are concerned about the targeting of Muslim communities at major transport hubs, including rail networks who faced targeted abuse, harassment and threats in recent weeks, especially during evenings and weekends. We urge communities to keep our tailored safety advice on trains in mind which we created in partnership with British Transport Police.

The hate crime investigation into the shocking targeting of the Oxford Mosque and Islamic Cultural Society on 28 October with a petrol can thrown into its car park is ongoing. Tell MAMA is liaising with Thames Valley Police. Anyone with information can call 101, quoting 43230484992. We can also do this on your behalf or anonymously.

Some shocking cases flagged with us made headlines in the media alongside spikes in cases including coverage in LBC, the Evening Standard and the Financial Times.

Previous bulletins highlighted broader anti-Muslim, anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian abuse, harassment, vandalism and violence.

Further notes:

We have safety advice in both English and Arabic – and urge Muslim communities to remain vigilant when out and about.

Tell MAMA received 400 anti-Muslim cases between October 7 and October 24

Tell MAMA recorded a six-fold increase in anti-Muslim cases between October 7 and October 24 compared to the same period in 2022.

We logged 400 cases (191 offline and 209 online, respectively) compared to 67 cases (both online and offline) the previous year.

Our previous bulletins revealed how dehumanising, racist language targeted Muslims, Arab and Palestinian communities both online and offline – when in public areas, speaking Arabic in public or targeting their homes or property.

Menacing threats, harassment, violence, discrimination and daily abuse were also registered in the cases flagged with us.

From the cases sent to us between October 7 and October 24, we can disclose that from the 191 offline cases, we captured 121 cases of abusive behaviour, 21 threats, 19 assaults, 11 acts of vandalism, 9 cases of discrimination, 7 acts of hate speech and 3 cases of anti-Muslim literature.

A clear majority of cases occurred in London (123), with other cases spread across the North West (21), Lancashire (6), South Yorkshire (5), West Yorkshire (9), East Midlands (7) and West Midlands (11), South East (2), South West (2), North East (4), and Wales (1).

Again, the numbers remain, like all Tell MAMA cases, subject to further revision and analysis.

As highlighted in our previous bulletin, cases included a man harassing a visibly Muslim woman and kept shouting “Hamas terrorist” at her in the street, a Twitter/X post calling for the bombing of Muslims, and issues in schools concerning students and teachers – including a teacher who wears a headscarf and faced abuse from a group of students that linked her to terrorism.

Some shocking cases flagged with us made headlines in the media alongside spikes in cases including coverage in LBC, the Evening Standard and the Financial Times.

The BBC reported on the abhorrent daily death threats made to staff at the Palestinian restaurant Shakeshuka – Tell MAMA remains in contact with the owner and will continue to provide them with assistance. We will also be liaising further with the Met Police.

Further notes:

We have safety advice in both English and Arabic – and urge Muslim communities to remain vigilant when out and about.

Tell MAMA records six-fold increase in anti-Muslim cases between October 7 and October 19

Between October 7 and October 19, Tell MAMA recorded 291 cases of anti-Muslim hate – a six-fold increase from the same period in 2022, as of yesterday evening.

Of the 291 anti-Muslim cases, we observed a two-fold increase in London alone.

Consistent with our previous bulletins, we continue to see how racist, dehumanising and threatening behaviours target Arab, Palestinian and Muslim communities offline and online. Alarmingly, we’ve had further cases of death threats made, including towards visible Muslim women and staff at a Palestinian restaurant. Tell MAMA is in contact with the owner and will continue to provide them with assistance. We will also be liaising further with the Met Police.

Here is a breakdown of cases to Tell MAMA:

132 offline cases – (8 assaults, 11 threats, 5 acts of vandalism, and 57 cases of abusive behaviour). Cases occurred in areas like London (88, a two-fold increase), Greater Manchester (15), Lancashire (5), South Yorkshire (3), West Yorkshire (6), East Midlands (5) and West Midlands (7), the Southwest (1), and Northeast (2).

159 online cases – consistent with last week, a majority of which contained dehumanising anti-Muslim language and tropes, equating communities with terrorism and violence.

Again, the numbers remain, like all Tell MAMA cases, subject to further revision and analysis.

Muslims faced abuse and dehumanising slurs online and offline, referred to as terrorists for their support of Palestine publicly, or told to “f*** off back to Palestine” or called ‘bombers’.

A man harassed a visible Muslim woman and kept shouting “Hamas terrorist” at her in the street.

Twitter/X removed a post from a woman in Staffordshire who called for the bombing of Muslims in reply to a viral photo of Muslims praying from a far-right account. Tell MAMA followed up with a police report after a member of the public got in touch.

Issues in schools also concern students and teachers – we spoke with a Muslim teacher who wears a headscarf who described facing remarks linking them to terrorism from a group of students.

Further notes:

We have safety advice in both English and Arabic – and urge Muslim communities to remain vigilant when out and about.

Anti-Muslim cases to Tell MAMA increase by 540% between October 7 and 16

Tell MAMA has recorded 200 cases between October 7 and 16, an increase of 540 per cent on the 37 cases (both online and offline) received over the same period last year, as of 1 pm today.

As our previous bulletin made clear, “The nature of many offline cases sent to our service is often overtly racist – targeting Arab and Palestinian communities with dehumanising slurs, anti-Muslim slurs or in some cases targeting their homes, or when speaking Arabic in public, as well as targeting Asian and Muslim communities.”

The following cases came into Tell MAMA between October 7 and October 16:

81 offline cases – (8 assaults, 11 threatening behaviour, 5 vandalism, and 57 cases of abusive behaviour). Cases occurred in areas like London (49), Greater Manchester (13), Lancashire (5), South Yorkshire (3), West Yorkshire (4), Derbyshire (2) and Birmingham (5).

119 online cases – consistent with last week, a majority of which contained dehumanising anti-Muslim language and tropes, equating communities with terrorism and violence.

The numbers remain, like all Tell MAMA cases, subject to further revision and analysis.

Examples of the rhetoric online and offline include calling Muslims “terrorists”, ‘Nazis” “barbaric” and “bloodthirsty” – in some cases compared to Nazis, language that appeared on social media.

The death threat made towards a Muslim woman on a train is also under investigation by British Transport Police.

A Palestinian Muslim family faced harassment and abuse, including “Nazi” slurs when out in public.

On Saturday, October 14, numerous reports came to us about graffiti in the Raynes Park area in Merton that included the words “Ilsam (Islam) is Evil” on various bus stops, including those near schools attended by Muslim children.

Further notes:

We have safety advice in both English and Arabic – and urge Muslim communities to remain vigilant when out and about.

Met Police data shows alarming rise in incidents towards Muslim and Jewish communities in London

Figures from the Metropolitan Police show a substantial rise in the targeting of Muslim and Jewish communities in London.

The force confirmed they recorded 58 anti-Muslim incidents and 54 anti-Muslim offences in London between September 29 and October 12 – an 87 per cent rise in incidents and a 58.8 per cent rise in offences when compared to the same period last year.

In that same timeframe, officers logged 105 reports of antisemitic incidents (up 650 per cent from the previous year) and 75 antisemitic offences (up 525 per cent) – a substantial rise from the figures of 14 incidents and 12 offences during the same period last year.

News of the alarming rise comes a day after we revealed a trebling of cases to our service in six days.

Between October 7 and October 12, Tell MAMA received 37 offline cases – that included three assaults, seven threatening behaviour and 27 cases of abusive behaviour, which happened also in London, but in other areas like Greater Manchester, Lancashire, South Yorkshire, Derby, and Birmingham. We also received 61 online cases, as we stated, “a majority of which contained dehumanising anti-Muslim language and tropes, equating communities with terrorism and violence.”

Over the same period in 2022, Tell MAMA recorded 30 cases and 10 cases last week (between October 1 to October 6, seven of which occurred offline).

The Community Security Trust (CST) recorded a 494 per cent rise in cases across the UK following Hamas’s deadly terror attacks with 190 incidents recorded in six days.

We have safety advice in both English and Arabic – and urge Muslim communities to remain vigilant when out and about.

Sunak announces £3m extra to protect British Jewish community after Hamas attack

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced £3 million in extra funding to protect schools, synagogues and other Jewish community buildings in the UK in response to Hamas’ attacks in Israel.

The money will be given to the Community Security Trust (CST) after the group, which acts on the behalf of British Jews on matters of policing and racism, said it had recorded a 400% spike in antisemitic incidents in the UK since the weekend’s assault.

No 10 said the additional money will enable the CST to place additional guards at schools it supports and allow for additional security staff outside synagogues on Friday nights and Saturday mornings when Jews are marking the sabbath.

Mr Sunak said: “This is now the third deadliest terror attack in the world since 1970.

“The United Kingdom must and will continue to stand in solidarity with Israel.

“At moments like this, when the Jewish people are under attack in their homeland, Jewish people everywhere can feel less safe.

“That is why we must do everything in our power to protect Jewish people everywhere in our country.

“If anything is standing in the way of keeping the Jewish community safe, we will fix it. You have our complete backing.”

It brings the total funding for Jewish community protection security for 2023-24 to £18 million.

The CST said it had recorded 139 antisemitic incidents, including assaults, in the past four days — a 400% increase on the same period in 2022.

The King held a private audience with the Chief Rabbi at Buckingham Palace to personally express his deep care and concern for the Jewish community in the UK who are suffering grief, fear and anguish, the palace said.

Following the meeting, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, who also met with Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer on Thursday, said the King’s words offered strength to the Jewish community “at this dark time”.

Mr Sunak convened representatives from UK policing and the Jewish community with ministers at Downing Street on Thursday for discussions on policing protests.

The roundtable, chaired by Home Secretary Suella Braverman, comes ahead of expected protests and marches taking place across the UK this weekend.

No 10 said specific guidance will be provided to police on the beat on where and when to intervene.

It comes after Mrs Braverman wrote to police chiefs this week saying that waving a Palestinian flag and chanting pro-Arab songs could amount to a public order offence if it could be deemed to be in support of terror atrocities.

Anti-Muslim cases to Tell MAMA triple in 6 days – an update

Tell MAMA is deeply concerned with the rise in antisemitic incidents in the UK and rising anti-Muslim cases to our service in recent days following Hamas’s deadly terror attacks on October 7 and the ongoing painful repercussions for Palestinians and Israelis.

The nature of many offline cases sent to our service is often overtly racist – targeting Arab and Palestinian communities with dehumanising slurs, anti-Muslim slurs or in some cases targeting their homes, or when speaking Arabic in public, as well as targeting Asian and Muslim communities.

For example, a Palestinian Muslim family had “Killers Terrorists” daubed on their front door.

Other cases see individuals called “bloodthirsty” and “terrorists” or in the online world, Muslims are described collectively as “terrorists” amidst calls for “mass deportations”. In one such online case, a Sussex-based individual who self-identifies as being on the far-right called for violent “resistance” against Muslim communities on Twitter/X. Such language places all Muslims into tropes that dehumanise them and which foment hatred towards them through this dehumanising language. This is not acceptable and Tell MAMA will work with victims who are targeted by this language to seek relief or support.

The following cases came into Tell MAMA between October 7th and October 12th.

37 offline cases (3 assaults, 7 threatening behaviour and 27 cases of abusive behaviour). Cases occurred in areas like London, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, South Yorkshire, Derby and Birmingham.

61 online cases – a majority of which contained dehumanising anti-Muslim language and tropes, equating communities with terrorism and violence.

For comparison, in the same time period last year, (between October 7th and October 12th 2022), we recorded 30 cases.

Tell MAMA received 10 cases last week (October 1 to October 6, seven of which occurred offline).

The numbers remain, like all Tell MAMA cases, subject to further revision and analysis, and are intended to demonstrate the rise our service recorded this week.

Speaking on this sharp rise in reported cases, the Director of Tell MAMA, Iman Atta OBE said: “This rise in anti-Muslim sentiment is deeply worrying. We know that the Community Security Trust is also demonstrating a sharp rise in antisemitism and this shows that what happens in the Middle East, has real consequences and impacts for communities in the UK.

I urge people who have been targeted by anti-Muslim hate to report to us so that they do not suffer in silence. We should never allow such hatred and intolerance to take root in our communities and at this time, please look out for each other, whether Muslim or Jewish. We must stand together against intolerance, hate and racism.”

Further notes:

Furthermore, Lancashire Police are investigating the dumping of a pig’s head at a proposed mosque in Barnoldswick on Sunday afternoon, as a man shouting “Islamic f****** scumbags” occurred in Rossendale on October 11.

With Hate Crime Awareness Week 2023 beginning tomorrow, we will continue to challenge all forms of racism and hate, promote mutuality and support, and why it is so crucial to report cases.

We have safety advice in both English and Arabic – and urge Muslim communities to remain vigilant when out and about.

In any emergency, dial 999.

Man filmed shouting “Islamic f****** scumbags” at a Muslim man in Rossendale

A viral video of a man shouting “Islamic f****** scumbags” at a Muslim man happened in Rossendale in Lancashire yesterday evening (October 11), Tell MAMA can confirm.

Our service was contacted this morning by a member of the public who provided us with the location and additional details.

The individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, did believe a hate crime report to Lancashire Police did happen, but Tell MAMA will be following up regardless.

The viral clip shows a white male in a red vehicle driving along Deardengate in Haslingden and begins with a reference to Israel as he then aggressively shouts “Wouldn’t f****** trust you” and “Islamic f****** scumbags” towards a male Muslim driver.

Yesterday, we wrote about the dumping of a pig’s head at a proposed mosque in Barnoldswick on Sunday afternoon.

On October 9, we posted on Twitter/X, “We are already seeing an increase in anti-Muslim hate and antisemitism here in the UK following the appalling events in Israel-Palestine. This is **not** acceptable. Report in anti-Muslim hatred or Islamophobia to us & we can assist. Report in antisemitism to @CST_UK.”

As with both cases, we endeavour to provide updates on both matters where possible.

If you have any information about the man in the video, please contact Lancashire Police on 101, or let Tell MAMA know, and we can contact the police on your behalf or anonymously.
