Racist and homophobic letter calls for white supremacist violence in Sheffield

A racist and homophobic letter calling for white supremacist violence has been spotted in Sheffield, causing fear and alarm.

The leaflet, found in the Crookes suburb of the city, contained the racist epithets the N-word and the P-word and used the homophobic slur ‘f****’.

The leaflet calls for a white supremacist summer of violence and calls for a month of hatred and was discovered over the weekend.

Tell MAMA reported the material on behalf of the member of the public who discovered it.

The racist and homophobic calls for violence appeared on a piece of paper torn from a notepad in what appears to be wax crayon or marker pen – with hate written in red with the harmful and hateful slurs written in purple.

Tell MAMA is urging members of the public in Sheffield to report the leaflets to South Yorkshire Police by calling 101 or using True Vision online. Our casework team can also report such materials anonymously or on behalf of those impacted in confidence.

Far-right terror suspects in Keighley charged with multiple terrorism offences after 3D-printed gun uncovered

Four people arrested concerning far-right terrorism earlier this month have been charged with multiple terrorism offences and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today (May 14).

Three of the individuals charged, named as Daniel Wright, 29, Liam Hall, 30, and Stacey Salmon, 28, all reside in Keighley in West Yorkshire, concern allegations that “they possessed an article, namely components of a 3D-printed firearm, in circumstances which give rise to a reasonable suspicion that their possession was for a purpose connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism”, a press release published this morning from Counter Terrorism Policing North East.

The fourth individual, identified as Samuel Whibley, 28, of Derwen Deg, Menai Bridge, in the Isle of Anglesey, is charged with six offences of the encouragement of terrorism contrary to Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006, and two offences of disseminating a terrorist publication that encourages terrorism contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

On and before 1 May, 2021, Daniel Wright, Liam Hall, and Stacey Salmon, are accused of having in their possession, without authority, a firearm which either has a barrel less than 30 centimetres in length or is less than 60 centimetres in length overall (Contrary to section 5(1)(aba) Firearms Act 1968).

Counter-terror police had initially made five arrests on May 1 in Anglesey, Bradford and Swindon. An extension approval a day later allowed the continued detention and questioning of the suspects. By May 7, counter-terror police released a 16-year-old from Swindon from custody without charge. A further extension allowed the police to question suspects until May 15, before charging decisions became public knowledge.

Neo-Nazi conviction is a ‘unique’ case

Rookie Ben Hannam’s conviction for belonging to an extreme right-wing group is a “unique” case, according to Scotland Yard’s counter terrorism chief.

Commander Richard Smith moved to reassure the public after it emerged that Hannam joined the Metropolitan Police after lying about his association with banned neo-Nazi organisation National Action.

Hannam had been working as a probationary officer for nearly two years when a list of users of the extreme right-wing forum Iron March was leaked online.

Once his email was linked to the forum, investigators uncovered his association with National Action up to the same month he applied to join the police in July 2017.

Mr Smith, who is head of the Met’s counter terrorism command, said: “We were investigating individuals linked to the Iron March forum, which carries extreme right-wing material.

“We were shocked to find one of the individuals we were seeking to identify turned out to be a serving probationary police officer.

“Ben Hannam obviously lied on his application form to join the Met.

“He would never have been able to join had we known then of his interest in the extreme right wing and his previous membership of National Action.

“Once we identified his involvement with that organisation, we took immediate steps to arrest him and put him before the court.”

He said there was no evidence that Hannam was part of a “deliberate” attempt by the extreme right to infiltrate the force.

A review of his work has not revealed any sign that he tried to draw others into his extreme ideology.

Mr Smith said: “We found no evidence that he used his position as a police officer to further his extremist views.”

During his time in the force, Hannam had no direct access to the Police National Computer, although he could have asked others to do checks on cases he was dealing with.

The Met’s vetting process for new recruits is “proportionate”, Mr Smith said.

“The processes we have to vet potential members of the police service are proportionate, that’s not to say they cannot be absolutely exhaustive.”

He declined to “speculate” on whether a face-to-face interview, rather than a vetting form, would have exposed Hannam’s views.

The officer said a reference from the university Hannam attended in the autumn of 2017 did not raise any issues.

Mr Smith added: “To the best of my knowledge this is a unique case.

“I’m not aware of any other police officer ever facing prosecution for membership of a terrorist group.

“I would reassure the public by pointing out how swiftly we acted, as soon as he was identified, to arrest and prosecute him.

“Ben Hannam had been in the Metropolitan Police less than two years when we got this information and we acted immediately.

“People join the Met Police Service with the intent of keeping people safe from harm.

“The views Ben Hannam expressed online and was interested in online are totally incompatible with being a police officer.”

The court had heard that Hannam, who has autism, was radicalised online and joined National Action’s London branch before it was banned.

On the threat posed to vulnerable people, Mr Smith said: “Radicalisation can take place through many routes. We have a clear concern about extremist material available online and we act robustly when we find it.

“I would urge anyone with concerns about somebody vulnerable to radicalisation who may be accessing this abhorrent material online to report the matter to the police there is specialist help available.”

The College of Policing’s Vetting Authorised Professional Practice (APP), which is national guidance and sets the standards for police forces in England and Wales on vetting, is being updated but not as a result of any specific case.

The national application form previously contained a question specifically about BNP membership, according to a spokesman for the College of Policing.

It was updated in December last year and now asks candidates whether they are or have been a member of a proscribed terrorist organisation or group.

This includes organisations which are “politically, religiously, racially or environmentally disruptive”.

German soldier in alleged far-right plot faces trial

A German court has said that a military officer indicted on allegations that he plotted to kill prominent politicians and blame the attack on refugees will go on trial in May.

The case of the officer, identified only as 1st Lt Franco A in line with German privacy rules, raised concerns about extremism in the country’s military.

The Frankfurt state court said he will go on trial on May 18.

The 32-year-old suspect, who is currently free pending trial, is accused of planning a serious act of violence among other offences.

Prosecutors allege the suspect, whom they have described as a “right-wing nationalist”, managed to pose as a Syrian asylum seeker and planned to carry out his attack under that identity so that refugees would be blamed.

His alleged targets included then-justice minister Heiko Maas and he had stockpiled four firearms including an assault rifle, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition and more than 50 explosive devices, some stolen from military stores, prosecutors said.

The suspect came to the attention of authorities after he was arrested in February 2017 while going to retrieve a pistol he had stashed in a Vienna airport bathroom.

He was freed, but Austrian authorities informed Germany.

When the soldier’s fingerprint matched the one he had given when he registered as a refugee, it triggered the investigation.

Upstander removed neo-Nazi sticker near bus stop in south-west London

A member of the public removed a neo-Nazi sticker with their house keys after spotting it on a phone box on a residential road in south-west London today.

Speaking to Tell MAMA, the upstander, who spoke on the promise of anonymity, described how they had been rushing to catch the bus on Rochester Row when the sticker caught their eye, which caused them to stop and remove it, adding their anger at how emboldened such groups felt in spreading their racist propaganda and seeking to spread division amongst the diverse communities in the area.

The sticker reads “Close Our Borders” and promotes a fringe but rather infamous neo-Nazi group named the Pie and Mash Squad. A group which years ago, arose from the far-right English football hooligan scene and over the subsequent years morphed into a white supremacist group, which uses Telegram to spread violent and harmful neo-Nazi propaganda, and along with other far-right and neo-Nazi groups in the targeting of refugees, Muslims, and other minorities.

Those affiliated with the Pie and Mash Squad also joined with other far-right groups and neo-Nazis to blockade roads during anti-refugee protests in Dover last month.

After a fan had made the football club Everton aware of similar stickers appearing outside of Goodison Park, the club condemned the stickers and confirmed that it would be working to remove them and ensuring that staff are vigilant to their potential presence. Local MPs and the Mayor of Liverpool also condemned the far-right and neo-Nazi stickers, after they also appeared near Anfield, home of Liverpool FC earlier this year.

Back in 2016, Tell MAMA highlighted how a flag of this group appeared at a far-right anti-mosque rally in Bolton in November, alongside members of the neo-Nazi group National Action, who, just weeks later, would become the first far-right and neo-Nazi terrorist organisation proscribed under the Terrorism Act 2000.

Months prior, the threat of public agitations from the Pie and Mash Squad and the South Coast Resistance caused the cancellation of a public celebration of Eid in Southampton in July 2016.

Shere Sattar, chairman of the British Bangladesh Cultural Academy, who organised the event, said at the time: “We have considered the political situation and unrest in UK after leaving the EU, the rise of racist activity and comments around other cities around the country, and Pie and Mash deciding to visit Southampton.”

Statement: Life sentence for the white supremacist terrorist who murdered 51 Muslims in Christchurch

We welcome the whole life sentence without parole given to the white supremacist terrorist who murdered 51 Muslims as they prayed in Christchurch, New Zealand. That fateful day tore families apart and thousands of miles away inspired further acts of far-right terror – from Norway, Germany, England, and parts of the United States. It also created one of the biggest ever spikes in reports to Tell MAMA – a 692% rise, with 12 incidents recorded in the previous week (March 8 – 14) and 95 the following week (March 15 – 21). Some celebrated this terrorism, as a ‘job well done’ on social media. In Oxford, on March 18, a Muslim woman, who wears the hijab, described hearing ‘shooting sounds’ from a middle-aged man as she walked to work.

The anti-Muslim and Islamophobic ideology espoused by Brenton Tarrant also took inspiration from mainstream politics in his native Australia and parts of Europe, as he also took inspiration from other far-right terrorists, including Anders Breivik of Norway.

Our report also shows the obsessive, far-right historiography of Europe, which glorified violence, conflict, and genocide against Muslims in the Balkans were written on the weapons used and in the screed published online.

As Justice Mander said: “He caused permanent and immeasurable suffering and harm to victims and families, the Muslim community and New Zealand.”

On Twitter, we kept a running thread of statements from the family members who lost loved ones, of those injured, and those traumatised by the events of March 15, and we urge members of the public to read them in full through the various links provided.

As the press focus in New Zealand rightfully shifted towards those impacted, we must also challenge the inconsistencies in the press coverage in the UK, where headlines did and did not reference terrorist or terrorism.

This inconsistency speaks to a wider, systemic problem in the framing of far-right terror more broadly, and is something we have long challenged. The goal was ideological: to use violence and murder for a white supremacist cause, to encourage harm, violence, and to terrorise Muslims globally. To dissaociate this violence from the ideology which underpins it is self-defeating and wrong. It must be confronted and challenged in all its forms.

Today, our thoughts are with the 51 victims, their families, survivors, and all those impacted by the terrorism enacted against the Muslims of Christchurch of New Zealand, amid celebrations of the verdict.

The conversations around racism, anti-Muslim hatred and Islamophobia must endure, as we continue to challenge those who seek to divide and who help mainstream the ideologies of violence and terror.

Far-right terrorist, 26, who admitted possessing explosives and bomb-making document had a long history of online hate

A Polish national who pleaded guilty to terror offences, had a long history of sharing anti-Muslim and Islamophobic content on Facebook, Tell MAMA can reveal.

Luton-based Filip Golon Bednarczyk, now 26, was charged last December with the collection of information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, contrary to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

An additional charge concerns the alleged making or possession of an explosive under suspicious circumstances, contrary to section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883.

The charges follow an arrest made on the eve of the General Election, and there was no immediate risk to public safety.

Bednarczyk has since pleaded guilty to possessing a 2kg bag of an explosive substance, identified as sulphur powder under suspicious circumstances, between May and December of last year.

He also admitted guilt concerning seven charges of possessing documents related to homemade explosives, including Semtex and black powder, which are likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

The prosecution has requested for sentencing to shift in lieu of the Crown receiving the defendant’s plea and to allow for the preparation of a psychiatric report.

Judge Anthony Leonard QC has since remanded Bednarczyk, with a sentencing timetable enacted as soon as possible.

During the trial, it was revealed that Bednarczyk had possessed the white supremacist screed of Brenton Tarrant, and memes glorifying the Christchurch terror attacks.

Our investigation, however, has revealed that Bednarczyk’s incendiary social media posts date back further, shifting between an inchoate interest in Satanism, nihilism, and anti-religious memes to hardened conspiracist and far-right memes about Islam and Muslims.

Two examples in this investigation, posted on Bednarczyk’s personal Facebook, revealed how entrenched this racialised form of conspiracist thinking about demographics had become, as, in October, a dehumanising meme of a Muslim woman pouring tea from a Union Jack teapot presented this as a ‘traditional’ UK outfit. Contrast that with a meme Bednarczyk shared on December 7, 2014, calling for the banning of the burqa (the image itself depicts the niqab, however), deployed the same dehumanising and securitised language, from a notorious page called ‘Stop the Islamization of the World’ – a page boasting almost 100,000 likes, would pepper Bednarczyk’s timeline throughout 2014.

Bednarczyk had also, on at least two occasions that year, liked memes calling for the nuking of Mecca, the holiest place for Muslims.

He had shared content from a similar far-right Facebook group in the Polish language which is against the so-called ‘Islamisation of Europe’ – Nie dla Islamizacji Europy, which boasts over 300,000 Facebook likes.

In September 2014, he shared an antisemitic meme which originated on 4chan, which spoke of an impending global war, where David Cameron, Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin were depicted wearing kippahs – the traditional skullcaps that demonstrate an outward sign of religiosity in Jewish men.

A year later, one post suggested that ‘liberal blood will flow in the streets’ for their tolerance of Muslims, transgender people, homosexuality, abortion, feminism, and paedophiles. He added that he would only return to Poland if the notorious far-right politician Janusz Korwin-Mikke took power.

Bednarczyk also shared videos promoting Mikke’s latest political coalition Konfederacja.

An avid YouTuber, Bednarczyk even uploaded a video in 2017 of himself cutting a membership of the far-right street defence movement Britain First.

More recent content, however, included a mocking photograph, taken outside of a church in Luton which had displayed a sign in solidarity with local Muslim communities.

A hateful and homophobic post in July called police participation and recognition of Pride events the “death of European culture and values”.

Filip Golon Bednarczyk appeared at Westminster Crown Court to confirm his name, age, and address in December and no application for bail or indication of plea was entered, according to his defence.

The prosecution outlined that a search warrant on December 11 resulted in the seizure of several handwritten documents, various digital storage devices, and a quantity of sulphur powder.

How the far-right weaponised a clip of the call to prayer to spread hate on Twitter

A trial public broadcast of the Islamic call to prayer (the adhan, azaan) in West London has been weaponised by the far-right on Telegram and Twitter to spread racialised conspiracies of hate.

The short video, which first appeared on Twitter on April 24, coinciding with the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, and would also appear a day later, after the journalist Aina Khan, shared the video, having remarked on its ethereal beauty, adding that public broadcast was a trial.

Within hours, and in the days ahead, the video was presented in a different, more harmful context when messages began to link the clip to racialised conspiracies of forced demographic changes.

As reported last week, the racialised and conspiracist manipulation of out-of-context videos had appeared on far-right Telegram channels had re-circulated from the same Twitter accounts, with one account boasting more than 60,000 video views – a ten-fold increase on what some of the earlier, non-inflammatory posts had generated.

Academics have explored how the far-right continues to weaponise visual content on social media with attention paid to the neo-fascist British National Party (BNP). Broader research explores the use of meme culture, and how the far-right adapt to new technologies for hyperpartisan, ideological pursuits.

A regional BNP Twitter account had captioned the shared video, “Retweet if you think this is Noise Pollution.”

This idea of ‘noise pollution’ and mosques has been explored by various academics, who have compared complaints about the East London Mosque broadcasting the adhan over loudspeakers in 1986 to similar protests against the Liverpool Mosque founded by Abdullah Quilliam in 1889.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown, mosques remain closed nationwide, and to remind Muslims of their togetherness in this holy month, mosques in parts of Europe, the United States, and in Canada, have been granted special dispensation to broadcast the azaan over loudspeakers.

In the city of Halifax, for example, in the Ontario province of Canada, approval was given to broadcast the azaan over loudspeakers at sunset throughout Ramadan.

In Minneapolis, in the United States, Mayor Jacob Frey granted a permit for Dar Ul Hijra Mosque to broadcast the azaan five times a day for the public during Ramadan, with loudspeakers directing the prayers towards Muslims living in the Riverside Plaza apartments, as to not to disturb businesses and other residents.

Before Ramadan began, other cities like Paterson, in New Jersey, announced changes to its ordinance to allow for exceptions to its noise regulations for various religious worship. Some mosques in Paterson, however, were publicly broadcasting the azaan, others do not. Officials added that there was no record of mosques in Paterson receiving noise summons for broadcasting the call to prayer.

This gesture offers a source of solace and comfort for Muslims observing the lockdown, with mosque doors remaining closed throughout the holy month.

TikTok bans Britain First and Tommy Robinson for hate speech violations

Video-sharing app TikTok has banned the accounts of far-right agitators Britain First and Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson).

In a statement, the company confirmed to Tell MAMA that both accounts “had been subject to an ongoing investigation due to the nature of some of the content posted.”

Multiple content violations concerned the use of hate speech, which fall foul of the platform’s Terms and Conditions.

The ban is permanent, meaning that neither Mr Robinson nor Britain First can return to TikTok.

A TikTok spokesperson said: “Keeping people on TikTok safe is a top priority and our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines clearly outline what is not acceptable on our platform. Content that seeks to promote hateful ideology has no place on TikTok and the accounts belonging to both Tommy Robinson and Britain First have been permanently removed for multiple violations of our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. We’re continuously enhancing our efforts to ensure that individuals and organisations seeking to promote any form of hateful ideology cannot establish a sustainable presence on TikTok.”

Recent investigations has exposed their activity on the platform.

Stephen Yaxley-Lennon and Britain First have been banned from all other major social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat.

Tell MAMA welcomes this ban, as all social media platforms have a duty to protect its users from hate speech, and ban those who breach its policies.

Far-right fakery: video of panic buyers queuing filmed 8 days before coronavirus lockdown began

A viral video purporting to show minority ethnic groups flouting the coronavirus lockdown is another incendiary piece of re-purposed far-right propaganda, Tell MAMA can reveal.

The video, which claims to show the police ‘ignoring’ long queues outside of a cash & carry store on Romford Road, in North-East London on April 17, first appeared online a month earlier, on March 17 – eight days before the prime minister Boris Johnson announced strict lockdown measures.

Others have attempted to use footage filmed on April 14 at the same location to stoke racial tensions.

The March 17 video appeared on Twitter at 4:51 pm GMT, and was captioned, “Panic buy in very famous Asian departmental store, The Mina store in Manor park, London E12.”

We compared both videos, revealing that the tweet on the left, was taken on March 17, eight days before the lockdown was introduced. On the right, is from a far-right user, using the same video to claim that it was filmed on April 17.

On the evening of April 17, the re-purposed content shared from the Twitter and Telegram accounts of a far-right activist which had gained over five-thousand views on both platforms, dwarfing the 202 views of the original video, which had reflected a moment in time when panic buying made headlines nationally.

On Twitter, the far-right @DawkinsReturns account, shared the re-purposed video with the caption ‘Social Distancing?’ but on Telegram, however, used racialised language to describe the minority ethnic groups featured as the ‘new British’. This user has previously shared anti-Muslim and far-right conspiracies on Twitter, including accusing a Muslim woman of ‘taqiyya‘ and sharing a video discussing demographic change captioned “Britain first live talk on demographics and the great replacement theory.”

The latter far-right conspiracy inspired the white supremacist terror attacks in New Zealand which left 51 Muslims dead last March (and inspired further acts of racist terror in various countries).

Other Twitter accounts would copy the text of this Telegram post, and when combined, had gained almost two-thousand retweets, as the video gained over 50,000 views from both posts.

Tell MAMA continues to urge Twitter to revise its policies and allow users to report tweets designed to mislead and stoke racial and religious hatred. Academics have made similar arguments and warnings.
